DALLAS — In front of a sellout crowd of 34,852 at Gerald Ford Stadium, SMU came up just short in a 48-45 overtime loss to Baylor, extending the Bears’ winning streak over the Mustangs to 14 straight games.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings led the Mustang offense, throwing for 296 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Romello Brinson continued his hot streak with his second consecutive 100-yard outing, hauling in 126 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, TJ Harden powered the Mustangs with 115 rushing yards and three scores.
Despite the offensive fireworks, SMU’s defense struggled to contain Baylor, surrendering 601 total yards. Bears quarterback Sawyer Robertson lit up the secondary with 440 passing yards and four touchdowns. Running back Bryson Washington balanced the attack with 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Robertson had plenty of help in the passing game as Ashtyn Hawkins (10 catches, 145 yards) and Josh Cameron (151 yards, 2 TDs) both eclipsed the century mark.
Special teams proved costly for SMU, as kicker Collin Rogers missed two field goals in the narrow defeat.
The Mustangs (1-1) now turn their focus to the road, traveling to Springfield to face Missouri State on Saturday, September 13. Kickoff at Robert W. Plaster Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m.
