True freshman wide receiver Jalen Cooper made an immediate impact in his debut for SMU during the Mustangs’ win over East Texas A&M.
The 6-foot-2 pass catcher, rated a four-star prospect by both On3 and Rivals coming out of Cibolo Steele HS near San Antonio, validated the hype by hauling in his first career touchdown. Cooper had 7 receptions for 78 yards and showed that he can get open and be a reliable target.
With crisp route running and consistent effort, Cooper has already positioned himself as a potential breakout offensive weapon for SMU this season.
Time will tell if the freshman can sustain his early momentum, but his debut offered a promising glimpse of what can come especially, after SMU enters the season ranked in the top 20 following a strong first year in the ACC.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings returns to lead the offense, though the Mustangs will have to adjust after losing running back Brashard Smith who is now in the NFL.
The transition opens the door for new playmakers to emerge, with freshman wideout Jalen Cooper adding another option to Jennings’ arsenal offensively for the Mustangs.
