The Week That Was….Week Five.
In a game featuring two of the most productive offenses in Class 5A DII, it was only fitting that defense held court inside Coach Kenny Deel Stadium on Friday night in Melissa. The home-standing Cardinals forced three turnovers and held defending 4A DI champ Anna, to 326 yards of total offense en route to a 21-18 come from behind win. The road ahead doesn't get much easier for Melissa who sits atop the District 4-5A D II standings.
Celina reclaimed the mantle atop District 7-4A DI with a resounding 42-7 win over 4-A DI favorite Panther Creek. Celina used an old school approach, combining a powerful rushing attack and a physical defense to avenge last seasons 31-27 upset playoff loss. The Bobcats defense held a Panther Creek offense averaging 47 points a game and almost 450 yards of total offense to just 58
yards and seven first downs. You think the Bobcats had a chip on their shoulder Friday night?
Coming off a narrow loss following a monumental comeback bid that fell just short a week earlier to Southlake Carroll, Trinity again found itself trailing a marquee opponent heading into the fourth quarter. A fortuitous penalty that kept the drive alive along with an iron will that refuses to quit, Trinity got back on track with a big time win against a quality district foe in Byron Nelson. Good teams find a way.
No .9 Allen awoke from a first quarter slumber, scoring on three straight second quarter possessions, in cruising to a 38-14 win over district 6-6A foe McKinney.
How bout them Coppell Cowboys?!?! Another strong effort from quarterback Edward Griffin, who passed for 305 yards and 6 touchdowns helped his team to an easy win over Hebron to remain firmly entrenched atop the district 5-6A standings.
No. 9 Argyle avenged last seasons heartbreaking playoff loss to Colleyville Heritage, escaping with a hard fought 42-35 win in a crucial district 3-5 DII showdown. The Eagles raced out to an early 21-0 lead, then held on for dear life as Colleyville Heritage mounted a furious 4th quarter rally. In the end, Argyle avenged the demons of last season while planting itself in the drivers seat in District 3-5A DII. Was this the final chapter between these two for 2024? Or should we stay tuned for the sequel?
