QB Hayes Hackney and RB Cam Newton Lead Walnut Grove to 29-28 win over Emerson

Written by: Marc Henry @marchen44

Walnut Grove’s thrilling 29-28 win over Emerson not only solidified their 3-0 start to the season but also marked a crucial win in District 4-5A Division II play, putting them at 1-0 in district competition. The Wildcats are in their second year of varsity football and the game was statement win for the young program. The victory showcased a team firing on all cylinders, particularly highlighting the impressive performance of freshman quarterback Hayes Hackney and junior running back Cam Newton, who together have become a potent offensive duo.

Hackney, despite his youth, played like a seasoned veteran, throwing for 258 yards and two touchdowns. What made his performance stand out even more was his ability to stay calm in critical moments, particularly during the game-winning drive. Down by 28-21 in the fourth quarter, Hackney led the Wildcats down the field with precision and poise, keeping his composure under heavy pressure. On the game’s defining play, Hackney took the snap, rolled out to his left to evade the rush, and found senior wide receiver Luke Watkins for the winning extra-point pass, giving Walnut Grove the 29-28 lead. His ability to make plays with both his arm and feet throughout the game was impressive, as he constantly used his speed and athleticism to extend plays and escape Emerson’s defensive pressure.

While Hackney’s heroics were a key part of the win, junior running back Cam Newton once again proved why he’s one of the top backs in the DFW area. Coming into the game with 304 rushing yards and five touchdowns through two games, Newton continued his dominance on the ground, reaching the end zone three more times and rushing for 145 yards. His running style, a combination of patience, vision, and power, allowed him to wait for his blocks to develop before exploding through holes and turning short gains into big plays. Newton’s ability to punish defenders with his strength and finish runs with authority has made him the engine of the Wildcats’ offense.

The Hackney-Newton combination has been a nightmare for opposing defenses. Hackney's arm talent and calm under pressure combined with Newton’s bruising, yet explosive, running style have created balance and versatility in Walnut Grove’s offense. This dynamic duo has been a major factor in the Wildcats' undefeated start, with Hackney emerging as a rising star and Newton continuing to assert himself as one of the areas premier backs.

This win was a statement for Walnut Grove, not just because it kept their record perfect, but because it showed their resilience in the face of adversity. Emerson kept the game close, but the Wildcats never wavered, with both Hackney and Newton leading the charge. The Wildcats offensive line played tough and gritty all game long. The team's ability to close out tight games, especially with such a young quarterback at the helm, speaks to the depth of talent and potential in this program.

As district play heats up, the Wildcats have set themselves up as a team to watch in 4-5A DII. With Hackney gaining confidence with every game and Newton providing a consistent, powerful presence in the backfield, Walnut Grove looks poised for a strong run through the season. If they continue playing at this level, they could be a serious contender not only for a district title but also a deep playoff run.
