SMU redshirt freshman punter Wade McSparron wasted no time making an impression in his collegiate debut, earning a spot on the Ray Guy Award “Ray’s 8” list, the Augusta Sports Council announced Tuesday.
In the Mustangs’ 42-13 victory over East Texas A&M, the Australia native showcased both leg strength and poise. McSparron punted three times for a total of 140 yards, averaging 46.7 yards per attempt. Two of those punts traveled more than 50 yards, including a 53-yarder that flipped field position and highlighted his potential as a special teams weapon for SMU.
The weekly “Ray’s 8” list recognizes eight of the nation’s top punters, and for McSparron, it marks the first honor of his college career. His early success adds to SMU’s confidence in its special teams unit as the season unfolds.
