Following a 10-0 loss to Silverdale Academy in Week one of the 2025 season, South Pittsburg has been, well, South Pittsburg.
The seven time state champions are among the favorites in Class 1a to win a state title in 2025.
You probably won't get an argument from Lookout Valley who finished on the wrong side of a 76-6 thrashing at the hands of the Pirates on Friday night.
Three first quarter turnovers by the Yellow Jackets led to a 49-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of play. SPHS smash mouth, run heavy offense was in full bloom Friday night, rushing for 334 yards on just 21 attempts.
“We’re going to line up and make you stop us” SPHS head coach Wes Stone said recently. “That's the way it has been here, forever. And it's going to continue to be that way.”
Seven different players toted the rock for SPHS with Zac Green and Jamychal Buckner doing the heavy lifting. Green led the way, rushing for 110 yards and 1 touchdown while Buckner finished with 86 yards rushing and 2 TDs.
Perhaps the most staggering statistic to emerge from a box score full of gaudy stat lines was the fact 10 different SPHS players scored a TD for the Pirates.
My, oh my.
Defensively, it was an absolute masterpiece with the Pirates allowing just 86 yards of total offense and forcing five turnovers; four of which went for a touchdown.
