THE WEEK THAT WAS….
In a game featuring a pair of nationally ranked teams, Duncanville emerged with a 28-24 victory over Maryland powerhouse, St. Frances Academy. Once again, Panthers quarterback Keelon Russell, a 5-Star Alabama commit, had a big night. Russell accounted for four Panther touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. His last one, a 22-yard strike to tight end Zachery Turner with under two minutes remaining, lifted Duncanville to the win and kept the Panthers perfect on the season. Russell is off to a great start in 2024, showing why he is the top-ranked quarterback in the state of Texas.
It wasn’t easy. And no one expected it to be based on the challenging schedule that the Golden Bears of South Oak Cliff have faced early on in 2024. Nonetheless, South Oak Cliff finally got up off the mat Friday night en-route to it's first win of the season, a thrilling 45-44 win over Longview on the road at the hostile Lobo Stadium. Golden Bears quarterback Carter Kopecky was sensational, going 25-for-34 for 279 yards and 2 touchdowns passing. Kopecky showed off his wheels on a 70 yard burst up the middle for six. Reggie McNeal Jr. had a rushing touchdown and he caught the game winning pass in the 4th quarter from Kopecky to seal the win. The Bears rushed for 261 yards, spoiling the Lobos 2024 home opener down in East Texas.
The beat rolls on for Coach Ray Gates and the North Crowley Panthers. The Panthers took apart yet another marquee opponent on Friday night, cruising to a 49-28 win over previously unbeaten Denton Guyer. So much for that emotional letdown after dispatching Desoto in week two. Chris Jimerson Jr. was on point from the jump. His ability to make big throws and direct the Panther offense enabled North Crowley to put the Wildcats away early, taking a 35-7 lead at halftime. He passed for 360 yards and 5 touchdowns. Quentin Gibson had another monster performance, catching 7 passes for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns. Gibson has 11 touchdowns on the season. He has seen his recruiting buzz take off during the first three weeks of the season. TCU, UTEP, Stephen F. Austin and Texas State have come to table with offers over the last two weeks.
Ho hum, just another businesslike win for Highland Park on Friday night, who remained unbeaten following a big 43-20 win over rival Dallas Jesuit in a game featuring a pair of undefeated teams. Coach Randy Allen has his team playing at a high level. The Scots seem to hitting on all cylinders, playing complementary football on both sides of the football. Both offensively and defensively, the Scots are playing well and head into week 4 undefeated at 3-0.
