Third Coast Wrap-Up: Houston Powers Make Early Statements as Week 2 Arrives

The opening week of the 2026 Texas high school football season delivered statement victories, dramatic finishes and several breakout performances across the Greater Houston area. From established powers such as North Shore and Katy to programs ready to make their own run, Week 1 offered an early look at just how deep the Houston football scene will be this fall.

Now, attention turns toward a loaded Week 2 schedule featuring ranked matchups, explosive offenses and several of the area’s most talented prospects.

North Shore opens its title defense in dominant fashion

Defending Class 6A Division I state champion North Shore picked up right where it left off, shutting out Lancaster 35-0 at Galena Park ISD Stadium. The Mustangs rushed for 287 yards, scored five touchdowns and never allowed Lancaster to establish any offensive rhythm.

North Shore’s ability to control the line of scrimmage remains one of the program’s defining characteristics. The names on the roster may change, but the Mustangs continue to play with the physicality, discipline and defensive speed expected from one of the premier programs in Texas.

Katy answers an early challenge

Katy opened it's season with an impressive 28-17 victory over Atascocita in one of the area’s biggest Week 1 matchups. The Tigers were able to withstand Atascocita’s athleticism and come away with a quality win against a program accustomed to making deep playoff runs.

For Katy, the victory was another reminder that the Tigers remain a major factor in the Houston-area championship conversation. Atascocita has plenty of time to regroup, but the Eagles will need to find more consistency as the season progresses.

Shadow Creek and Ridge Point earn ranked victories

Shadow Creek delivered one of the weekend’s strongest defensive performances, holding Summer Creek to 14 points in a 24-14 victory. The Sharks limited an explosive Bulldogs offense and showed they can win with defense while their offense continues to develop.

Ridge Point survived a tough challenge from Dickinson, escaping with a 29-26 victory. The Panthers were tested for four quarters but found a way to finish, which could prove valuable later in the season.

Those two victories set up one of the premier games on the Week 2 schedule: Shadow Creek against Ridge Point.

C.E. King’s offense explodes

Few teams made a louder opening statement than C.E. King. The Panthers rolled past Conroe 70-10, showing that their explosive offensive attack remains dangerous.

Scoring 70 points in the opener will certainly attract attention, but Week 2 will provide a much stronger test. C.E. King must now face a Cypress Ranch defense that held Hightower to seven points in a 24-7 victory.

Randle continues to rise

Randle secured one of the state’s most impressive opening-week victories by defeating South Oak Cliff 20-14. The Lions proved they are capable of matching the physical style of one of the Dallas area’s premier programs.

Running back Landen Williams-Callis remains the centerpiece of the Randle offense and enters Week 2 only one touchdown away from tying the Houston-area career record. His combination of speed, vision and playmaking ability makes Randle one of the most dangerous teams in the region.

Crawford makes an immediate impact

Crawford made its Class 5A debut with a convincing 51-24 victory over state-ranked La Porte. Alvin Mosley led the charge with four touchdowns as Crawford showed it is prepared to compete immediately at its new classification.

Crawford’s Week 1 performance was more than just an opening victory. It was a warning that the Chargers could become one of the Houston area’s most interesting teams to follow this season.

Other Week 1 results that stood out

Bridgeland rallied for a 31-30 victory over The Woodlands, while Klein Cain survived Humble 42-41. Grand Oaks earned a 38-35 win over Klein Oak, and Mayde Creek edged Fort Bend Elkins 38-35.

Willis opened with a dominant 38-0 victory over Magnolia, Klein Collins defeated Tompkins 42-21, Westfield held off Houston Heights 16-10 and Cy-Fair shut out Tomball Memorial 36-0.

Cleveland also produced one of the weekend’s most meaningful results, defeating Spring Woods 26-11 to end a 36-game losing streak.

TCG Week 2 Games to Watch

Randle vs. Westfield

This matchup brings together two physical, undefeated teams with championship expectations. Randle enters after beating South Oak Cliff, while Westfield’s defense allowed only 10 points against Houston Heights.

The biggest question will be whether Westfield can contain Williams-Callis without leaving itself vulnerable elsewhere. Randle wants to establish its running game, control the clock and force Westfield to tackle consistently in space.

Westfield must win early downs and prevent the Lions from dictating the pace.

This should be one of the most physical games of the weekend.

Shadow Creek vs. Ridge Point

Both teams arrive at 1-0 after defeating ranked opponents. Shadow Creek leaned on it's defense against Summer Creek, while Ridge Point showed its ability to survive a close game against Dickinson.

The matchup could come down to quarterback play, turnovers and which offensive line handles pressure more effectively. Shadow Creek cannot afford to give Ridge Point short fields, while the Panthers must remain patient against an athletic Sharks defense.

This game should provide an early indication of where both programs stand in the Houston 6A hierarchy.

C.E. King vs. Cypress Ranch

C.E. King’s high-powered offense meets a Cypress Ranch defense that looked impressive against Hightower. The Panthers will attempt to create explosive plays and apply pressure with their tempo. Cypress Ranch must tackle well, limit possessions and keep C.E. King’s offense on the sideline.

After scoring 70 points in Week 1, the Panthers will face a far more revealing challenge. If Cypress Ranch can slow the game down and avoid turnovers, this matchup could remain close deep into the fourth quarter.

Klein Collins vs. Willis

Klein Collins and Willis both opened the season with convincing victories. Klein Collins scored 42 points against Tompkins, while Willis shut out Magnolia 38-0.

This matchup features two talented quarterbacks and offenses capable of producing points quickly.

The game could be decided by defensive pressure, third-down execution and which team protects the football. Willis will also be looking to reverse the results of it's recent meetings with Klein Collins.

Yates vs. Madison (Southside Classic)

The Southside Classic brings history, community pride and neighborhood bragging rights. Yates enters the matchup after opening its season with a 24-0 shutout, while Madison will be eager to respond following a one-point loss to Clear Brook.

Records rarely tell the complete story in a rivalry game. Emotions will be high, and discipline could become the deciding factor. The team that avoids penalties, controls the running game and handles the atmosphere will have the advantage.

Final word

Week 1 confirmed that Houston will once again play a major role in the statewide championship picture. North Shore remains the standard, Katy continues to win high-level games, and programs such as Randle, Shadow Creek, Ridge Point, C.E. King and Crawford appear ready to make noise.

Week 2 will reveal even more. The opening-week excitement is over, opponents now have current film to study, and the next round of marquee matchups will begin separating early contenders from teams still searching for answers.
