Sam Houston State secured a major piece for its 2026 recruiting class as three-star defensive lineman Uzziah Warmate (6-0, 250) of Denton Ryan announced his commitment to the Bearkats over the weekend. Warmate chose SHSU over offers from Georgia State, Houston, Sacramento State, and UTSA, giving the Bearkats one of the most disruptive defenders in Texas.
Warmate was a force during his junior campaign, racking up 90 total tackles, 36 tackles for loss, and nine sacks while helping Ryan to a 13-2 record and a trip to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals. His dominant season earned him District 3-5A DI Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2024. He also showcased his athleticism on offense, contributing 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns as a short-yardage back.
Through three games this fall, Warmate has already picked up where he left off, totaling 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and one interception.
Warmate’s game is built on quickness off the snap and explosive agility that allows him to win both on the interior and the edge. He’s stout against the run, showing the strength to anchor inside, but also possesses the speed to chase plays down in pursuit. His versatility makes him a valuable chess piece for the Bearkats’ defensive front.
Sam Houston State continues to recruit heavily in Texas, and landing a disruptive lineman like Warmate is a statement pickup. With his production, motor, and athleticism, Warmate has the chance to make an early impact in Huntsville and could develop into a cornerstone defender for the Bearkats.
