On last Friday, the annual Battle of Grand Prairie took place, and as many predicted, South Grand Prairie came out on top. However, the scale of the blowout was historic. SGP defeated Grand Prairie 54-0, the largest margin of victory the Warriors have ever recorded against the Gophers. It also marked the first shutout in the rivalry since 2014.
From the very start, the Warriors established their dominance. After forcing a Gopher punt, quarterback Daylon Brooks scored on a rushing touchdown during the second play of SGP’s opening drive. To further set the tone, the Warriors executed a fake PAT that turned into a successful two-point conversion.
From that point on, it was all SGP. The game became so one-sided that Brooks was pulled after just 15 minutes of play, giving way to backup quarterback Ryan Goss. Goss made the most of his opportunity, throwing for 73 yards and a touchdown. While those numbers might not seem overwhelming, it’s worth noting that both teams agreed to shorten the game by four minutes and allowed the clock to run continuously to finish the contest.
Statistically, the Warriors were dominant across the board. They finished with three times as many total yards as Grand Prairie and averaged an astounding 25.63 yards per pass, compared to the Gophers’ 1.25.
This level of performance isn’t new for the Warriors. This season, they’ve won every game by at least 17 points, with an average margin of victory of 43.33 points. Since Brooks took over as the starting quarterback, SGP has gone from a three-win season to a perfect 6-0 start.
Every player on the roster has been performing at a high level, and the chemistry between key players like Daylon Brooks, Cash Clark, Josiah Lucas, and Cade Wallace has been a major factor in their success. Their connection is rare, reminiscent of the 2024 Plano East basketball team, known for their seamless teamwork and ability to anticipate each other’s moves. As Coach Matt Diggs once said of that team, “They knew each other like the back of their hands.”
While it might be premature to call SGP a title-contending team, their chemistry and consistency are undeniably special. With a relatively light strength of schedule, there’s a strong chance the Warriors could run the table. Whether or not they make a deep playoff run, this South Grand Prairie team has already proven that they’re something truly remarkable.
