The No. 1 team in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes, have long made the state of Texas a key recruiting ground and that pipeline continues to deliver elite talent.
Recent stars such as 5-star cornerback Devin Sanchez (North Shore), linebacker Riley Pettijohn (McKinney), and NFL standout wide receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba (Rockwall) all hail from Texas and chose to take their talents to Columbus.
This week, the Buckeyes extended offers to two of the top freshmen in the Lone Star State: ATH Sukora Cooper Jr. from Life Oak Cliff and DB Braylen Cunningham from North Crowley.
ATH Sukora Cooper Jr. | Life Oak Cliff (TX) | 6’1”, 180 lbs
Cooper Jr. has exploded onto the scene during his freshman campaign. Offensively, he’s a dynamic playmaker as a wide receiver with elite speed, strong hands, and excellent body control. His quickness off the line and ability to separate make him a constant deep threat, and his large catch radius allows him to dominate 50/50 balls. He runs crisp routes and Cooper Jr. attack the ball at the catch point with aggression.
Heading into October, Cooper Jr. had already totaled 803 yards and 12 touchdowns. In a statement performance against Madison, he showcased his versatility, starting at quarterback and accounting for 421 total yards and 5 touchdowns (210 passing, 211 rushing).
Defensively, he’s proven just as valuable. With the ability to play corner or safety, Cooper Jr. displays great range, a smooth backpedal, and strong tackling skills in run support.
He recently picked up offers from Miami and Nebraska, adding to his growing list alongside Ohio State.
DB Braylen Cunningham | North Crowley (TX) | 5’10”, 157 lbs
Cunningham has all the traits of a lockdown corner. He’s a fluid athlete with elite hips and footwork, allowing him to stay in phase and mirror receivers downfield. In press-man coverage, he’s physical, disciplined, and rarely gives up ground.
Cunningham is also a force in run support, a sure tackler who plays fast and confident.
On special teams, he’s a dangerous returner with great vision and burst. Last week against Weatherford, he showcased that explosiveness with a punt return touchdown that was called back due to a penalty.
The North Crowley standout already holds offers from SMU, Texas Tech, and Penn State, with his stock continuing to climb following Ohio State’s attention.
Texas Talent Pipeline Keeps Flowing to Columbus
Ohio State continues to make its mark in Texas, identifying elite prospects early and building relationships that have paid off in recent years. With Cooper Jr. and Cunningham now on the radar, the Buckeyes are once again proving why they’re among the best recruiters in the nation.
